When the battle moved to space, this red mobile suit emerged as the favored suit of Char Aznable "The Red Comet." It features a design true to the anime form, with exceptional mobility, color scheme, and effect parts that recreate scenes from the series and allow for inter-series compatibility.

Both the anime-accurate form and an impressive range of motion are achieved. The new gimmick, developed after extensive mobility verification, allows for anime-like movements. The skirt retracts and adjusts with leg movements, enabling natural posing. The multi-structure abdominal joint allows for forward bending and arching, enhancing dynamic poses.

The set includes various optional parts such as a naginata rotation effect, vernier, and beam rifle firing effect. Additionally, it comes with a shoulder cut damage part, replicating the damage from the battle with Gundam.

The Gelgoog was collaboratively developed by Zeon's top three arms manufacturers: Zeonic handled basic production and avionics, Zimmad took care of the thrusters, and MIP developed the weapons. As the first Zeon mobile suit to feature beam weapons, including a beam rifle and beam sword, its completion was delayed by three months due to the complexity of these weapons.

The early production model was released in October U.C. 0079, but beam weapon production didn't begin until late November. Despite its advanced specifications, which matched the Federation's RX-78-2 Gundam, the Gelgoog had a limited impact on the war due to its late deployment, participating only in the final month of the conflict.

This issue was exacerbated by the significant loss of experienced Zeon pilots by the time of its rollout. During the Battle of A Baoa Qu, many Gelgoogs were piloted by inadequately trained recruits, preventing the mobile suit from performing to its full potential.
