Toru Furuya Steps Down from Iconic Roles Amid Scandal

Toru Furuya, the voice actor known for his roles as Tooru Amuro in "Detective Conan" and Sabo in "One Piece," has announced his resignation from these famous characters. Furuya, who also voiced Amuro Ray in "Mobile Suit Gundam," is stepping down as a result of personal controversies.

In May, "Weekly Bunshun" revealed Furuya's extramarital romance with an average woman, also his fan, prompting public apologies from Furuya on his X (previously Twitter) account and his agency, Aoni Production, on their official website. The issue continued on June 11, when Furuya said that he will no longer be engaged in Atlus' future game "Metaphor: ReFantazio," which is set to debut in October.

Aoni Production issued the following statement regarding Furuya's departure:
"Thank you very much for your continued support.

We have recently been in repeated discussions with actor Toru Furuya regarding the series of scandals involving his agency.

As a result, we have asked him to step down from his roles in the two productions 'Detective Conan: Amuro Toru' and 'One Piece: Sabo,' which have directly and significantly damaged the image of the work and the character, and we are pleased to announce that he has accepted this request.

We would like to once again offer our deepest apologies to everyone involved in the production and to the many fans who support it.

Aoni Production Co., Ltd."
Furuya also released a personal statement:

"I, Furuya Toru, apologize for causing inconvenience and concern to many people due to my selfish actions.

Regarding my future appearances in 'Detective Conan' and 'One Piece,' which have caused great damage to the image of the works and characters, after much consideration and with a heavy heart, I have decided to step down from the roles of Amuro Toru and Sabo as the only way I can make amends to everyone involved with the series, the many fans who support me, and to the works and characters.

We would like to take this opportunity to once again apologize to everyone for the inconvenience caused. I am truly sorry for this."
Future of Amuro Ray Role
While Sunrise, the production company behind "Mobile Suit Gundam," has yet to release a statement regarding Furuya's role as Amuro Ray, it is widely understood that this role is also under review in light of the recent events.

Furuya's departure marks a significant moment in the anime industry, as he has been a staple voice in many iconic series. The impact of his resignation will be felt deeply by fans and production teams alike.
